Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Asus speed Comment: I bought an Asus 1005PE Netbook on my way to the airport for a business trip to Spain. I was truly disappointed with the speed of the device while surfing or checking email. I found that if I opened more then 2 Windows Internet Explorer pages the 1 gig of ram the box came with was spent. I was tempted to purchase a 2 GB stick but it cost the equivalent of 85 US dollars in Spain. A friend told me to download Mozilla Firefox for Internet browsing and it made the Netbook act like a brand-new machine that I could open multiple Internet pages and stream video without any problems. I have since replaced the 1GB memory with a 2Gb ($42) but haven't noticed much difference due to the speed obtained with dumping MSExplorer. Bottom line, download Mozilla Firefox! Peace! Not fast, but battery life is amazing. Loaded all my software I was running on my XP laptop (streets & trips with gps, office 2003, micrsoft money, garmin mapsource, and some CAD software from work). Has performed flawlessly. Most of the windows live stuff I uninstalled (except email). I did sign up for the boingo wi-fi because the intro offer was cheap and has come in handy. Main reanson I purchased was portability and battery life. Battery gets about 10 hrs from my usage (I tend to run many things in parallel). Customer Rating: Summary: Slight but welcomed upgrade to my old 1005HA Comment: I purchased the 1005PE-PU to replace the 1005HA I gave to a family member. I think my entire family will have netbooks before I'm done buying the latest and greatest. lol This time, I wanted to have a netbook that ships with Windows 7 since I have that install on our desktops. The extra battery life is just a nice bonus. You may be inclined to get the 1005PE-MU with less battery life. Consider getting the 1005PE-PU instead. I think the extra battery life comes in handy if you prefer to keep the netbook running in high performance mode with wifi on. The 1005PE-PUalso comes with Bluetooth. You can use this to connect your netbook to your Bluetooth cell phone and surf the web. The extra battery life really comes in handy if u run your netbook all day with your cell phone draining the battery a bt via USB. Seems like a good deal for only a couple dollars more. Regarding the 667 versus 800 memory question, I used the 667 module in my 1005HA. Based on what I've read on the web, I ordered the 800 MHz model for my 1005p. They cost about the same these days: [...]. Just hold on to your packaging and receipt if you have problems. This netbooks does not come with a DVD drive so consider getting a cheap external one: [...]. If you are considering the old and cheaper 1005HA, one nice thing it has is a full size right shift key. It's still a good machine if you don't mind XP (you can upgrade it to win7 later). Customer Rating: Summary: It does its job! Comment: This is my first netbook. So far, it's been great. I've taken it just about everywhere with me. Keep in mind, it's a netbook, don't expect it to replace your desktop or notebook. I have to say, this thing gets it job done and does it well, namely, web-browsing and light "off hours" work. Don't expect to be doing intensive processing. The 1005PE had one main feature the made me say "YES, you're the one!" The battery life - estimated at 14 hours under efficient settings and well over 9 hours for my preferred settings. For the most part everything else was very similar to the Toshiba NB305. The 1005PE has a few things that need some getting used to, the keyboard has an unusual level of flex which makes it feel a little flimsy. Also, due to the shape of the netbook, it tend to be back heavy so it's not very balanced when I type on it while sitting on the couch. The whole thing tends to rock back and forth. Comment: I purchased the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BK for my Wife. She wanted a light weight small unit that she could do email and Facebook on basically. I'm the computer geek, so I was looking for a nice viewing screen, good feel on the keyboard, good price and features, but most of all GREAT battery life. This unit had just hit the streets with a new processor that claimed up to 14 hours of battery life. Overall it fulfilled both our needs and wants. And because it is a netbook, it fits inside most of my wife's purses. The keyboard has a decent feel if you are a touch typist and seems a bit larger than some netbook keyboards. The trackpad is the same black color and therefore blends in with the surrounding area, but is easy to detect because it is covered with very tiny "bumps". ASUS says that its' quick startup and long battery life is also because it uses Windows 7 Starter. The battery life is pretty right on when doing email and basic surfing the internet. Of course, if you are doing video or light weight gaming, it will fall off but will still surprise you. Remember it does not have a built-in CD or DVD drive. I purchased the ASUS external DVD Writer ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D1S-U (Black). It works great...and does not have a power plug or "brick". Its' power comes straight from this netbook. It comes with a two headed USB plug that connects directly to the side-by-side USB ports on the ASUS Seashell. The two connections allow it enough power to function properly. One other thing to know is that this unit is black, GLOSS BLACK! NICE! But that means that you will see EVERY finger print and smudge. ASUS does include a small microfiber towel and it does get plenty of use. More Reviews
