Customer Rating: Summary: Great travel pc, terrible keyboard layout Comment: I agree with all the other reviewers regarding the many plusses of this little machine - low price, super battery life, ideal for when you need to travel to make a presentation and do not want to take your large, expensive, information-filled laptop on the road.
My one complaint is the keyboard layout. I cannot type on this thing without running into problems. On the lower right corner, the PG UP and PG DOWN keys are actually half-sized keys, sharing the space with right and left arrow. I am a big guy, six foot two, 240 lbs, with fairly large hands, and no matter how hard I try, my fingers keep brushing against the PG UP minikey, and I find myself typing text into the wrong place in my document. I went out and bought a ten dollar USB full sized keyboard and that has been the solution.
I see that other brands are designing their netbooks in such a way that they avoid the ACER keyboard problem. If I were doing this over again, I would buy one of those and avoid the ACER design.
Customer Rating: Summary: Acer is the best in the business (for right now) Comment: It should be noted in some cases I found the wrong images shown. If the photos show a monochromatic silver netbook this is wrong. Only the lid is silver, the rest (keyboard, bezel, bottom and battery), are all black. I specifically own the Acer Aspire One AO532H-2223 and AO532H-2575 models that I purchased from Amazon. Through my work I have used just about every brand and model sold in the netbook world--I change computers about every 3 months and use 2 to 4 simultaneously. Acer also sells this model re-branded under the Gateway name tag. Acer is good about giving you exact choices. The Aspire One and specifically the 532H comes in just about every flavor from any color choice to 3-cell, small 6-cell large 6-cell batteries, Bluetooth no Bluetooth, and Windows 7 Starter or Home XP. You can't go wrong. The only choice I wish Acer would offer is the HD screen res at 1366x768 in the 10.1 inch.
Of all the Brands including Asus, Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba, etc, Acer leads the way in value and quality.
Acer over other brands:
Acer has user accessible RAM, HDD and WWAN bays.
Acer has best in class touchpad (opinion)
Acer has best value (most for the least $) you can almost always find an Acer One for less than others.
Acer BIOS and recovery software
Acer design and construction quality
As far as warranty and customer service is concerned, (which is independent of the product), I have heard horror stories on every company. As PC companies outsource this department it is not uncommon to get inexperienced foreign reps who know nothing about what they are trying to help with. Since I don't have any personal experience with this as I am pretty computer literate and at the prices these netbooks sell for I consider them disposable anyways, I'm not going to judge this computer on intangibles.
The first thing I do with all my netbooks is drop in a Crucial 2GB Ram stick (quite easy with this model), and then remove and clone the small and slow HDD before powering up the netbook, (also very easy), In this case I installed a 250GB 7,200RPM Seagate Momentus 7200.4. This can be done for under a hundred$ and still keeps the overall cost under 400$--worth the performance enhancements. In my case I have extra ram and HDD around so doesn't cost me more. The AO532H-2223 runs Win 7 Starter which I find sucks up more resources over XP therefore slowing things down. The only drawback I find with Acer, which is true with most netbooks is the 1024 pixel screen. At this resolution any program that has a window of 1000 or more pixels (web surfing), will require scrolling from side to side. Also this resolution doesn't lend a kind hand to multiple side by side windows. A minor nuisance.
This is my 14th different Acer model with a screen of less than 11.6 inches in the last 2 years and I will be back every time for my next one. Only Dell with their Mini 1012 comes in second but loses due to requiring complete tear-down for HDD and Ram upgrades. HP 210 comes in dead last with many hardware issues (although it also has easy access to ram, wwan, and hdd), and Sony second to last with their inflated pricing and poor material choices.
In short any Acer Aspire One model will do you good and not disappoint.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bad product Comment: I just got this netbook for 2 weeks. If I play music longer such as 20 minutes, it makes huge noise and locks up. I have to restart system to be able to use again.
Customer Rating: Summary: Would be great if not for haunted cursor/touchpad Comment: Love everything about this computer except one major thing. If not for that would love it more than any other computer I've ever owned.
The one thing is this: My cursor or touch pad seems to be haunted. At times, it will simply ignore my touch and do whatever it wants which is a far cry from what I want it to do.
I'm computer competent...I've done all the troubleshooting I can. When researching this problem online it seems the only fix is to replace the touchpad and I can't be without my computer for more than 6 hours. So when it gets haunted, I just work around it as best as possible or shut down and do something else for a bit then come back, then it seems to come back to life.
I don't know what causes this...but it's extremely annoying.
Customer Rating: Summary: Disappointed with the product Comment: I bought the netbook 2 months ago. It crashed twice already. It says it's 8 hour battery but when I turn on the computer immediately after charging overnight it says 5.5 hour remaining. On top of that it is slow in turns of uploading pages, dragging page bars, pointers, etc. I heard the same comments from a friend who got an acer netbook also. I think I am going to return this unit back to the store.
